Program Overview
At School, our Early Childhood program nurtures the whole child academically, spiritually, and socially during the most important years of development.
Rooted in authentic Montessori philosophy and guided by Christian values, students learn through hands on exploration, purposeful work, and meaningful discovery in a calm and structured environment. Each child progresses at their own pace while building independence, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
Our program blends Montessori instruction with strong academic foundations in literacy and mathematics while emphasizing minimal to no technology so students can fully engage with real world, sensory experiences.
At Hughen, we partner with families to provide a flexible and supportive experience that prepares students not only for academic success, but for a life of purpose and service.

Service Opportunities
At Hughen School, service begins in the heart and is nurtured through purposeful action. Rooted in our Christian mission and Montessori philosophy, we guide even our youngest learners to care for others, their environment, and the world God created.
In a Montessori classroom, children naturally develop independence, responsibility, and a sense of community. We intentionally build on these traits by providing meaningful opportunities for students to serve with purpose.
Caring for Our Environment & Community (PK–K)
Our youngest learners begin by serving within their immediate environment:
- Caring for their classroom through practical life activities
- Creating thank-you cards to show appreciation for school staff
- Participating in simple campus and garden care
These experiences foster independence, gratitude, and stewardship—key foundations of both Montessori learning and Christian character.
Expanding Compassion Beyond the Classroom (Grades 1–2)
As students grow, their service extends into the broader community:
- Preparing hygiene kits for local shelters
- Creating cards and gifts for senior citizens
- Participating in read-aloud and kindness outreach
- Engaging in gardening projects that care for God’s creation
Through these hands-on experiences, students develop empathy, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of loving their neighbors.

In true Montessori fashion, children engage in meaningful, real-world tasks that connect learning with purpose. Each service opportunity is rooted in biblical values, helping students see that their work, no matter how small, can make a difference.

Curriculum
Our Early Childhood program is rooted in the Montessori philosophy, where children learn through hands-on exploration, purposeful work, and guided discovery in a peaceful, Christ-centered environment.
Our approach includes:
- Authentic Montessori Instruction: Child-led learning across all subject areas using hands-on materials that build independence, concentration, and a love of learning.
- Literacy Development: Carefully selected resources to support strong reading and writing foundations.
- Mathematics: Concrete Montessori materials to develop deep understanding of numbers and problem-solving.
- Early Foundations (PK4): Language-rich experiences to nurture communication and school readiness.
In keeping with Montessori principles, our classrooms emphasize minimal to no technology, allowing children to fully engage with their environment, develop focus, and learn through real-world, sensory experiences.
Assessment
In our Montessori-inspired environment, teachers thoughtfully observe and guide students,
using assessment to support, not interrupt, the natural rhythm of learning.
Guiding the Learning Journey
Teachers continuously monitor progress through:
- Careful observation and one-on-one interactions
- Quick checks for understanding
- Engaging, interactive activities
These ongoing insights allow teachers to gently adjust instruction and meet each child where they are.
Celebrating Growth & Mastery
As students deepen their understanding, they demonstrate their learning through:
- Projects and presentations

- End-of-unit evaluations
These moments allow students to take ownership of their learning and celebrate their progress.
